Turtles love to travel; did you know that the Leatherback Turtle can travel over 16000 kilometres a year.
Sea turtles lay their eggs on dry, sandy beaches. Immature sea turtles are not cared for by the adults. Turtles can take many years to reach breeding age, and in many cases breed every few years rather than annually.
There are many breeding grounds around the Australian coastline, and it can be possible to visit these sites to witness Turtles laying eggs, or the hatchlings emerging for their first trip to the sea. (Many of these sites are managed by Park Rangers to ensure that the egg laying is not disturbed, and visitors are guided during the nights events)
Researchers have recently discovered a turtle’s organs do not gradually break down or become less efficient over time, unlike most other animals. It was found that the liver, lungs, and kidneys of a centenarian turtle are virtually indistinguishable from those of its immature counterpart.
